Confirmation for Children at St Margaret’s and Our Holy Redeemer’s Parishes
All baptised Catholic children are to be confirmed.
The parish clergy and the pastoral team will assist parents and carers to make sure this happens at the appropriate time.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the baptised.
Our Holy Redeemer’s Catholic Primary school or St Eunan’s Catholic Primary school provide the immediate preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation for all children living in the territory of our parishes. (Those attending St Eunan’s Primary school should follow the school programme and the specific requirements for Confirmation at St Eunan’s parish).
In the Archdiocese of Glasgow, of which our parishes are a part, our young people are, at present, confirmed when aged 11 or 12, at Primary 7 stage.
All parents must meet, as directed, with parish clergy prior to the reception of this Sacrament by the young person being presented. As these young people are under 14, it is not normally permitted for a him or her to receive this Sacrament without the parent or the person who looks after the young person making clear to parish clergy it is their wish.
Throughout their time at the parish Catholic school our children and young people grow in, and learn about, their Catholic faith. The young people to be confirmed are specifically taught about this Sacrament at school, on a daily basis, in the months prior to the reception of the Sacrament. This may include material brought home from school to be completed with parents or carers.
The parishes Youth Formation Team also provides a Confirmation club for the young people which beings prior to Confirmation and meets on Fridays at 4.30pm, continuing after Confirmation until the summer. Full, specific, details are announced each year.
It is crucial that parents and those who look after the young people take their role of preparing the young person and handing on the faith to him or her.
Each child to be confirmed will need a Sponsor. The Catholic godparent from baptism would make a very good sponsor, but that may not be possible. Sponsors are to be Catholics, at least 16 years of age, and themselves Confirmed. They should be a good example of Christian living to the child they sponsor and so should look closely at their own lives to see if they live in accordance with the values of the Gospel and the teaching of the Church, not least frequent and regular reception of the Sacraments.
